Abstract

Todorović G., I. Šatarić, N. Delić, and M. Babić (1996): The heritability of ear length in maize (Zea mays L.). - Genetika, Vol. 28, No. 1, 1 -8.

A total of 15 maize hybrids of the F1 generation, developed by diallelic crossing of six inbred lines, was examined in order to observe the mode of ear length heritability. Very significant values of general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining abilities were determined for both investigation years by analysis of variance, indicating that additive and dominant gene effects were important for ear length heritability. The relation GCA/SCA was lower than 1 for both years, pointing to a greater significance of dominant genes in the expression of this trait. The analysis of variance of genetic components for ear length indicates that additive (D) and dominant (H1 and H2) components significantly affect heritability of this trait. The value of the parameter D, which was lower than the values of H1 and H2, points to its prevailing significance in ear length heritability. The results obtained are in accordance with those for the analysis of variance of combining abilities for this trait. The negative value of F reveals that the number of recessive genes was higher than the number of dominant genes in parents included in the diallel crosses. This is, also, confirmed by the ratio between the total number of dominant and recessive alleles in all parents (Kd/Kr), which was lower than 1 in both investigation years. The mean degree of dominance, higher than 1 and the interception point of the regression line with the Wr axis under the point of origin indicate superdominance in heritability of maize ear length.

Abstract

Delić N., J. Đorđević, G. Todorović and M. Babić (1996): The evaluation of commercial hybrids of maize (Zea mays L.) as donors of favourable, alleles for the improvement of an grain yield of elite SChhybrid. - Genetika, Vol. 28, No. 1, 9-16.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate commercial hybrids as donors of new, favourable alleles for grain yield improvement. The following three methods: lp1 μ (a method proposed by Dudley,1987a), XTC, or the mean of crosses of a donor hybrid to both parents of the elite single cross (S p r a g u e and E b e r h a r t, 1977), and the UBND MINIMUM method (Zanoni and Dudley, 1989, cit. Gerloff, 1985); were used to evaluate the relationship, concerning genetic relatedness, between donor hybrids and parents of the elite single cross. The results obtained by the three applied methods were compared using the rank correlation proposed by Spearman (Hadživuković, 1991).

Eight American commercial hybrids were evaluated for their potential to improve grain yield of the elite hybrid Mo17 x L62. The best donor hybrid for grain yield improvement, on the basis of all three applied methods, was Palma. All investigated hybrids were shown to be more genetically related to the inbred parent L62 by the relation: (P2xD)-(P1xD)+(P1-P2)/2 (Dudley, 1987a).

Very strong (agreement) between the applied methods for evaluation of favourable alleles was obtained. These results suggest the possibility of applying the XTC method alone, as it requires the lowest number of entries, i.e. it is the most reasonable one.

Key words: alleles, donors, improving hybrids, inbred lines.

Abstract

Babić M., Z. Pajić, N. Delić, and G. Todorović (1996): Identification of donors containing favourable alleles for grain yield and popping volume in pop com (Zea mays L. everta). - Genetika. Vol. 28, No. 1, 17-22.

The principal purpose of this study was to evaluate three pop corn inbred lines as possible sources of favourable alleles for grain yield and popping volume improvement of an elite pop corn hybrid. Therefore the relative number of favourable, dominant alleles (µG) and unfavourable, recessive alleles (µF and µD) were evaluated in potential donors. Relatedness of potential donors with parental components of the elite hybrids was determined as well as the best possible mode of developing the initial population. Inbreds with a high frequency of unfavourable alleles for the observed trait can also have favourable alleles for the same trait, at a locus class where parents of the improving elite hybrid have fixed unfavourable allies. The results obtained on utilisation of the best enhancer of grain yield (ZPNP11) show serious reduction of popping volume and therefore the improvement should be done using the donor ranked the second for grain yield and the first for the popping volume (ZPK6).

Abstract

Vančetović J. and G. Drinić (1996): Correlations among more important agronomic traits in two maize composites. - Genetika, Vol. 28, No. 1, 23-28.

Genetic correlations among grain yield and some more important agronomic traits (plant and ear height, ear length, number of kernel rows per ear and 1000-kernel weight) of 100 S1 and 100 HS families each of two composites (Composites B and M) were investigated in this study. Also, genetic correlations between the two mentioned types of families were studied for corresponding agronomic traits. The results obtained showed that the highest correlation was detected between grain yield and ear length in S1 families and between grain yield and 1000-kernel weight in HS families in both composites. Indirect selection for grain yield over some other trait would be purpose less except for HS selection over 1000-kernel weight increase in Composite M. Genetic correlations between S1 and HS families were the lowest for grain yield in both composites, though this value was higher in Composite M. These points to either higher similarity of allele frequencies between the two types of families for grain yield in Composite M, or to a greater share of additive variance in the total genetic variance for grain yield in relation to Composite B.

Key words: genetic correlations, maize, S1 and HS families

Abstract

Andjelković V., R. Stikić, S. Pekić and M. Ivanović (1996): Correlations between yield and yield components in two maize synthetic populations with different abscisic acid (ABA) contents. - Genetika, Vol. 28, No. 1, 29 - 35.

Two maize synthetic populations were derived from crosses of inbred lines Polj 17 (with a high capacity for ABA accumulation) and F-2 (with a low capacity for ABA accumulation). These inbreds showed significant variability for this trait under field conditions. Mean values and correlation coefficients were analysed for the following traits: grain yield, 1000-kernel weight, the number of kernel rows per ear and the leaf ABA content. Significant, medium strong and strong correlations between grain yield and yield components were found (especially in plants of the population with a high capacity for ABA accumulation). Moreover, negative and weak relations among leaf ABA content, yield and yield components were detected in plants of the population with high capacity for ABA accumulation, while this relation was medium strong and very significant in the plants of the other population.

Abstract

Šesek S., and A. Kondić (1996): The effect of the genotype on the occurrence ofhalbino regenerantshin wheat anther culture. - Genetika, Vol. 28, No. 1, 37 - 42.

Although the high incidence of albino regenerants in wheat anther cultures in vitro is yet to be fully explained, it is generally thought to be caused by genetic factors as well as culture conditions. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the genotype on the frequency of green and albino regenerants. Anthers were isolated from 15 different F1 wheat hybrids (Triticum aestivum L.) and grown on the Potato 2 inductive medium. On average, 4.5 green plants were obtained per 100 anthers isolated, the range being between 0 and 21.6%. The average frequency of albino regenerants, in relation to the total number of anthers isolated, was 6.7%, ranging from 0 to 23.5%. The average frequency of green plant regeneration ability in relation to the number of calluses formed was 19.3%. Genotype No. 4 x NS 55-25 (F1) had the highest percentage of green regenerants in relation to the number of calluses formed (52.9%), and genotype Pobeda x Novosadska rana 5 (F1) had the highest percentage of albino regenerants (66.7%). The frequency of albino plants averaged 29.3%. In general, approximately 40% of the plants regenerated in the experiment were green and 60% albinos. The study showed that there as significant differences in the investigated genotypes as to the number of green and albino regenerants obtained, indicating that albinism is a genotypic character.

Abstract

Zdravković J., Ž. Marković, M. Damjanović and Z. Šušić (1996): Inheritance of locule number in tomato fruit. - Genetika, Vol.28. No. 1, 43-48.

The inheritance of locule number in tomato was studied in 15 hybrids of the F1 and F2 generations obtained by diallelic analysis of crosses of 6 parental genotypes with significantly different numbers of locules per fruit. The number of locules in the F1 generation was inherited additively. In the F1 generation 8 hybrids showed intermediary inheritance, while 5 combinations demonstrated dominant and partially dominant inheritance. In 4 hybrids, the mode of inheritance was not found because the parental genotypes were not sufficiently divergent for this characteristic. In the F2 generation, 5 combinations demonstrated intermediary inheritance and 6 hybrids demonstrated partial parental dominance with a smaller number of locules. The results for combining abilities in the F1 and F2 generations suggest that the genes with additive effects prevail, regarding the inheritance of this characteristic. This analysis was made according to G r i f f i n g (1956), method 2, model 1. The highest GCA rate was in line SP-109 (-1,067) in the F1 generation.

Zdravković M., D. Čorokalo, R. Đorđević, and J. Zdravković (1996): The influence of inherited factors on inheritance of the first pod height in beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). - Genetika, Vol. 28, No. 1, 49 - 54.

Diallel analysis of six different genotypes was used for examination of the first pod height in beans. The results obtained using method 2 model 1 (Griffing 1956) for analysis of combining abilities, indicated that the mode of inheritance was different, ranging from intermediate to superdominant, for each generation (F1 and F2). Analysis of combining abilities, pointed to a greater influence of additive gene effects in relation to dominant ones, especially in the F2 generation.
