Section Meeting, held on April 15, 2005

zavod za kukuruzThe Section’s meeting held on April 15, 2006 took place at Rimski Šančevi at the Maize Department of theInstitute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sadand was attended by 34 Section members. The meeting was opened by the President of the Section on Breeding of Organisms, Prof. Dr Vasilije Isajev, who informed those in attendance of the conclusions reached by the Presiding Council of the Serbian Genetic Society at its recent meeting. One of the conclusions was that all sections of the Society should hold their meetings by mid-April that year and that Section Presidents and Vice-Presidents should be elected.

malesevicIn his welcoming address at the beginning of the meeting, Prof. Dr Miroslav Malešević, Director of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, stressed the importance of plant breeding and genetics for the success of work carried out by the Institute and the Institute’s achievements in the development of NS plant cultivars released home and abroad.

kobiljskiAt the working session of the meeting,dr Borislav Kobiljski, Senior Scientific Associate at the Small Grains Department of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, gave a lecture on„The Necessity for Change of Breeder Attitude Towards Use and Importance of Molecular Markers in Modern-Day Breeding of Organisms..The ensuing discussion emphasized the importance of genetic markers and MAS in modern plant breeding and a proposal was put forward that the Section of Breeding of Organisms should hold a scientific meeting on the topic of genetic markers and MAS.
Dr Janoš Berenji, Scientific Advisor at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, was unanimously elected President of Section on Breeding of Organisms for the next four-year term (2006–2010).

Dr Saša Orlović,Senior Scientific Associate for breeding and genetics of forest trees and Director of the Institute of Lowland Forestry and Environment in Novi Sad, was elected by unanimous vote as Vice-President of Section on Breeding of Organisms for the 2006–2010 period

Newly-elected President Dr Janoš Berenji presented his Section work program proposal for the upcoming period. The most important planned activities are as follows: (1) Section member list update; (2) Creation of a Section web page within the web page of the Society; (3) Improvement of communication within the Section by holding meetings at the various organizations working on plant breeding in the country; (4) Establishment of cooperation with the Serbian Association of Plant Breeders and Seed Producers and holding of joint meetings with said organization; (5) Organization of 3rd Symposium on Breeding of Organisms; (6) Active participation in the 4th Congress of Serbian Geneticists; (7) Examination of possibilities for establishing links with similar societies abroad; and (8) Active participation in public debates dealing with plant breeding and genetics legislation.

drinicDr Goran Drinić, President of theSerbian Association of Plant Breeders and Seed Producers,informed the cooperation with the Section, notified them of the decision made by the association’s presiding council to jointly organize a scientific meeting with the Section, and presented information on the journal Selekcija i Semenarstvo (Plant Breeding and Seed Production). Presented at the meeting was also information on the journal Genetika (Genetics) as well as information on an upcoming symposium entitled Genetically Modified Organisms: Scientific, Economic and Social Aspects, held on May 4 and 5, 2005 in Belgrade.
