Abstract

Kriebel, H. B. (1978): Genetic selection for growth rate improvement in Pinus strobus. - Genetika, Vol. 10, No. 3, 269-276.

Estimates of expected gain in wood volume production were made in 20-year-old provenance tests and in progeny tests up to age 13. In both cases, selection differentials were moderate to permit conversion to seed orchards. In provenance tests, a 30% gain over yield from average local genotypes is expected from provenance selection. Family selection in progeny tests of the local provenance was estimated to increase yield by about 22%. A mixture of trees of selected southern provenances and selected local families is recommended for new plantations to provide certainty of adaptability as well as maximum yield.

Abstract

Mukherjee, B. K. and Saha, B. C. (1978): Investigation on the nature of heterosis expressed in crosses of varieties and synthesized populations of maize (Zea mays L.). - Genetika, Vol. 10, No. 3, 277-285.

Three newly constituted genetically broad based populations and three exotic varieties from different geographical regions were included in a diallel mating system to produce fifteen F1 crosses (excluding reciprocal crosses). The advanced generation of the F1's and the parents were developed by selfing. All these materials along with seven checks were planted in the Kharif season of 1976, in the fields of I.A.R.I. Studies on the influence of different types of crosses on the nature and magnitude of heterosis were carried out for various important agronomic traits. The results indicated that the population x population type of cross gave the maximum heterosis and also performed the best in comparison with the best check. The magnitude of inbreeding depression of these various types of crosses indicated that the variety x variety type of cross lost a major part of its heterosis in the F2 generation whereas the population X population type showed a minimum depression. The investigation indicates the possibility of breaking the heterosis barrier for grain yield by contributions from intra-population heterosis to interpopulation heterosis, thus leading to higher yields.

Abstract

Badawi, M. and Füredi, J. (1978): A methodological study of cell culture with the aim of inducing protoplast fusion between jive varieties of carrot (Daucus carota). - Genetika, Vol. 10, No. 3, 287-295.

Fused or unfused protoplasts isolated from activity growing cell suspensions of five varieties of carrot (Duwicki, Nantesi, Chentenay, Vörös óriás, and Fertödi vötös) have been induced to divide repeatedly, and to undergo embryogenesis. The present study showed large differences between varieties and the superiority in embryogenesis of the Duwicki variety, over the other four varieties. This makes it a good material for further embryogenesis, regeneration or organogenesis studies. Among the plantlets obtained from the different somatic combinations only a small number succeeded in developing completely.

The success of transplantation depends on the size and age of the plantlets, the temperature and relative humidity of the air and the variety used.

Abstract

Petrović, S. and Borojević, S. (1978): Occurrence of awns in crosses between awnless wheat varieties. - Genetika, Vol. 10, No. 3, 297-306.

To explain the occurrence of awned spikes in crosses between awnless varieties and to study the inheritance of awns more precisely the Chinese Spring monosomics were crossed with several hexaploid wheat varieties (awnless Sava and Bezostaja-1 and bearded ones NS-322 and Yecora-70).

The awn development was studied in F1 monosomics and F2 progeny from F1 monosomics. Different awn inhibitors and promoters have been located on particular chromosomes in all studied varieties.

Abstract

Borojević, K. (1978): Population-genetic research in self-pollinated plants. - Genetika, Vol. 10, No. 3, 307-312.

This is a short review of the literature and our own research on investigations in populations of self-fertilizing plants. All genes in one individual are transferred to the following generations because genes are completely linked. Therefore, the unit of inheritance is the genotype. Each genotype behaves as an allele of the multiple allelic locus in haploid organisms.

Abstract

Adamović, D. (1978): Investigation of genetic differences between isolated cultures of Puccinia recondita f. sp. tritici on selected wheat lines.- Genetika, Vol. 10, No. 3, 313-321.

The question of the occurrence of genetic differences between cultures of Puccinia recondita f. sp. tritici, isolated from races 61 and 77 (UN 3 and UN 13) which were multiplied in the greenhouse for about 60 uredopustular generations, was studied in the present paper. The cultures were produced by monopustular isolations in three cycles. Lines of wheat selected for resistance to Puccinia recondita f. sp. tritici were used to show genetic differences between the cultures of parasite. The investigation was carried out using seedling plants.

The results have shown that the genetic differences between all ten isolated cultures of parasite have occurred.

Abo-Bakr, M. A., Hussein, M. M. and Gad El-Hak, S. H. (1978): Cytogenetical studies in cowpea (Vigna sinensis). - Genetika, Vol. 10, No. 3, 323-336.

The chromosome number of Vigna sinensis was confirmed to be 22 chromosomes in both varieties Pusa Barasati and Pusa Phalguni. Meiotic behaviour was examined in the two varieties and their hybrid. Certain qualitative and quantitative characters were studied in F1, F2, Bc. P1, Bc. P2 in the straight and reciprocal crosses between the two varieties. Partitioning of simple correlation coefficient for yield and yield components in the cross between the two varieties and their reciprocal were also described.

Abstract

Petkoyic, I. (1978): Association of acrocentric chromosomes in patients with malignant diseases. - Genetika, Vol. 10, No. 3, 337-342.

Associations of acrocentric chromosomes were studied in patients suffering from chronic myeloid leukemia, lymphosarcoma and in normal individuals. The results showed smaller number of cells with associations and fewer acrocentric chromosomes involved in satellite associations in patients with malignant haemopothia than in normal subjects.

The effect of environmental conditions such as medium composition, incubation temperature and postmutagenesis treatment, were examined in order to establish the mutagenic effect of uv-irradiation and 0.2% caffeine in Streptomyces rimosus ATCC 10970 (R7) and its auxotrophic mutant 1086' (ura-4, ade-20). Forward mutation rate, auxotrophic marker reversion frequency and morphological changes were studied. The data obtained suggest a strong influence of all the environmental conditions examined on the survival and mutageneicity of both strains.

Abstract

Savic, A. (1978): Histones - basic proteins of chromatin. - Genetika, Vol. 10, No. 3, 369-387.

A selection of data concerning the primary structure of histones, their interaction with DNA and their metabolism is presented. The general and specific characteristics of histones are discussed from two aspects, concerning their possible functions; one, considering histones as structural elements of chromatin, and the other regarding histones as possible participants in processes regulating gene activity. At present, the existing evidence supports preferentially their structural role. Nevertheless, the regulatory role of histones, exerted by modifications of their primary structures, can not be excluded.

Karyological investigation of Cobitis taenia taenia L. from the waters of the Ukrinski Lug fishery station has revealed a sexual dimorphism regarding the individual chromosome complements. The population studied was found to consist of an overwhelming majority of triploid females (3n = 75) and a certain number of diploid males (2n = 50).
