Sofradžija, A. (1982): Chromosomes of the species Silurus glanis L. 1758 (Siluridae, Pisces), - Genetika, Vol. 14, No. 2,103-110.

The chromosome complement of the species Silurus glanis has been studied by observing mitosis in the kidney epithelium of individuals from a Jugoslav lake called Ukrinski Lug (Bosnia). The diploid chromosome number of the species is 2n = 60, and the chromosome arm number is NF = 98.

Partial trisomy 11q due to maternal translocation is decribed in female infant who was noted to have marked growth retardation, abnormalities of the head, unilateral choanal atresia and hypoplasia of the vulva.

Previously published similar cases are analysed in the discussion.

Abstract

Ajdarić, B., Korać, D. and Garzičić, B. (1982): Two children with the cri du chat sindrome as the consequence of a familiar translocation type 46,XX, t(5;15) (p11; q26). - Genetika Vol. 14, No. 2, 121-123.

It is well known that in more than 10% of cases the cri du chat disorder is caused by reciprocal translocation in one of the parents. This translocation may involve different chromosomes. It seems to be exceptional to find the balanced translocation 5p; 15q in a mother - resulting in two children with the cri du chat syndrome which has been clinically and cytogenetically diagnosed. The results of the cytogenetical and clinical investigations in these children are reported in this paper.

THE INFLUENCE OF GENOTYPE AND ENVIRONMENT OF THE YIELD OF WINTER RYE

Abstract

Martinčić, J. and Kovačević, J. (1982): The influence of genotype and environment on the yield of winter rye. - Genetika, Vol. 14, No. 2, 125-133.

During 1979 and 1980 nineteen varieties of winter rye were subjected to small-scale trials on sites at Potiravska Slatina, Slunj and Gospic. From the kernel yields obtained the following data were evaluated: the correlation coefficients and determinations between the yields of kernel varieties from the same site in different years (r = 0.61**; r2 = 0.371**); from different sites in the same year (r = 0.63**; r2 = 0.403**); from different sites in different years (r = 0.46**; r2 = 0.211); and between the two year average yield of kernel varieties on different sites (r = 0.71**; r2 = 0.502**). The correlation coefficients and determinations of the yeild of kernel varieties on different sites in different years of testing (r = 0.46**; r2 = 0.211**) varied significantly from the correlation coefficients and determinations of the two year average yield of kernel varieties on different sites (r = 0.71**; r2 = 0.502**) (t = 2.35). The coefficient determinations for kernel yield between individual trials ranged from 0.109 to 0.798, which means that from 10.9% to 79.8% of the variability of the kernel yield was caused by inherited differences, or, • alternatively, that from 20.2% to 89.2% of this variability was influenced by the environment and interaction between the variety and the environment. The determination coefficients for the two year average kernel yield ranged from site to site between 0.338 and 0.827, meaning that from 33.8% to 82.7% of the variability of the kernel yield was caused by inherited differences between the varieties. The multiple correlation coefficients and determinations of the three variables ranged from (r = 0.39; r2 = 0.154) to (r = 0.92; r2 = 0.844).

Abstract

Jovančević, R. (1982): Some properties of Fl apple hybrids obtained in the region of Polimlje. - Genetika, Vol. 14, No. 2, 135-142.

When high quality foreign apple cultivars are introduced into individual fruit growing regions of Yugoslavia, the needs for cultivars which would suit the area in question is not always adequately met. Therefore it is necessary to breed new high quality and high yielding apple cultivars with greater adaptability to the ecological conditions of the Polimlje region (Montenegro).

Lysogenization of UV-irradated Escherichia coli with the λ phage during postirradiation incubation was studied. It was shown that, in contrast to bacteria infected with the λcI857 ind phage, the lysogenization of bacteria infected with the λ+ phage was dependent on a functional recA gene. It is concluded that large quantities of RecA protein, produced after UV irradiation, diminish the ability of the λ+ phage to establish the lysogenic state in infected bacteria.

Abstract

Adrović, S. (1982): Comparative studies on the synchronisation of mitosis (statmockineses) induced by colchicine and tuberite individually and in combination with ascorbic acid. - Genetika, Vol. 14, No. 2, 151-170.

The effect of colchicine and tuberite individually and in combination with ascorbic acid on mitosis and the chromosomes of maize root was investigated in this study. The aim was to determine whether ascorbic acid changed the activity of colchicine and tuberite. Colchicine and tuberite were used as aqueous solutions (0.2%) and ascorbic acid in a concentration of 0.25%.

Induction of dominant lethal (DL) mutations in male mice (101 x C3H) was investigated after a single intraperitoneal injection of methotrexate (10 mg/kg body weight). The obtained data show that MTX induces dominant lethal (DL) mutations. The greatest percentage of DL mutations and pre- and post-implantation losses were detected in the premeiotic germ cell stages.

Abstract

Ivanović, S. and Sladić-Simić, Đ. (1982): Cytogenetical study of bone marrow cells in the Belgrade laboratory rat. - Genetika, Vol. 14, No. 2, 175-178.

The Belgrade laboratory rat which is a carrier of the recessive mutant gene b, belongs to the Asian type of black rat, R. norvegicus, with polymorphic X-chromosomes. Homozygous b/b rats have hypochromic, microcytic anaemia, while the heterozygotes cannot be distinguished from normal rats. Analysis of bone marrow cells revealed a high frequency of tetraploidy in both, b/b and +/b rats, as compared to normal rats. The higher frequency of tetraploidy in heterozygotes is the first recorded expression of a single b gene.

Cytological and clinical observations of an abnormal human male with a karyotype possessing an extra small chromosome are presented. The same type of chromosome was found in his mother and grandmother, both with a normal phenotype. The origin of the extra chromosome was not ascertained because the G-banding technique did not give a satisfactory result.

Abstract

Borojević, K. and Hart, G.E. (1982): Electrophoretic analysis of mutant leaf-rust resistant lines of wheat.-.Genetika, Vol. 14, No. 2, 187-190.

Two leaf-rust resistant wheat lines which were derived after treatment with gamma rays from the variety San Pastore were analyzed with the zymogram technique. The zymogram phenotypes of the lines for two of the twelve enzymes analyzed (aminopeptidase and endopeptidase) were found to differ either from the variety San Pastore or from standard leaf-ust resistant lines.

Abstract

Konstantinov, K., Denić, M., Šatarić, I., Vuković, M. and Stanojević-Dukić, S. (1982): Relationship between ribonuclease activity and cold tolerance in inbred maize lines. - Genetika. Vol. 14, No. 2, 199-206.

The ribonuclease activity in eight inbred lines of maize (Zea mays, L.) has been determined. Enzyme activity in the soluble fraction of 4 - day old seedlings and mature endosperm tissue was lower generally in the hardiest genotypes. The difference between genotypes was more intensive when 0.50 M KC1 was used in the incubation mixture. Similar results were obtained with root tissue but not with the same degree of difference.

An effect of EDTA on ribonuclease activity was observed and the results are discussed.
