Savković, N., Pečevski, J., Vuksanović, Lj. and Radivojević, D. (1982): The action of chenodesoxycholic acid on the reproductive system of male mice and their progney. - Genetika, Vol. 14, No. 3, 207-215.

The aim of our investigation was to study the effect on the genetic system of chenodesoxycholic acid (HENOHOL) extracted from chicken and turkey liver, denoted as HENOHOL-natural, then HENOHOL-synthesized, a product of the Pharmaceutical industry ,,Galenika", Beograd and imported HENOHOL-Fermion OY.

The results showed that the fertility of animals treated with HENOHOL was within the limits of normal values. The highest percentage of fertile animals occurred in the group treated with HENOHOL-synthesized. None of the three HENOHOL preparations decreased the meiosis showed that HENOHOL did not induce chromosomal translocations in directly treated males or meiosis showed that HENOHOL did not indice chromosomal translocations in directly treated males or in their progeny.

The cytological effects of the herbicides trephlan and patoran on G annum var. "aleksinačka babura" was discussed in a previous report, (So p o v a et al, 1980). It Was found that both herbicides altered the frequencies of meristematic stoges, reduced the mitotic activity and caused chromosomal abnormalities at meiosis, depending on the concentrations of chemicals used.

The present investigation was planned to evaluate the cytological effects of the herbicides trephlan and dervinol on C. annuum "Rotund green" SK-70 and to determine whether both herbicides show the same cytological effects on different varieties of C.annuum species.

The amount of genetic variation was studied electrophoretically at 8 enzyme loci in Gentiana asclepiadea, Gentiana pneumonanthe and Gentianella austriaca. High genetic identity (I) values were observed between Gentiana pneumonanthe and Gentianella austriaca (0.8532) and between Gentiana asclepiadae and Gentianella austriaca (0.7742), whereas the genetic identity between Gentiana asclepiadae and Gentiana pneumonanthe (0.3742) was rather low. The systematic status of Gentiana asclepiadea, Gentiana penumonanthe and Gentianella austriaca is discussed in relation to these findings.

Milošević, M., Marinković, D. and Anđelković, M. (1982): A. study of the regulation of tissue specific expression of α—amylase in Drosophila melanogaster and Erosophila subobscura.  - Genetika, Vol. 14, No. 3, 249-258.

In the present paper an attempt has been made to analyse in D. melanogaster and D.subobscura the variability of gene regulation of a-amylase activity and its inheritance. D. melanogaster lines homozygous for the 2nd and 3rd chromosomes still exhibit variation for midgut patterns, but it is reduced compared to the heterozygotes. Analyses of α-amylase activity in parental and filial generation of s, D. subobscura show that the regulation of the A my locus seem to be polygenic. Although the inheritance of MAP types is not yet understood, it could be suggested that there is a difference in the degree of polymorphism in some parts of the regulatory complex of genes.

The interaction of Adriamycin (ADR) with hyperthermia on the induction of chromosomal aberrations was investigated using isolated mammalian cells. Mouse L cells were exposed to hyperthermia (42°C) simultaneously with or 1 hour before or after ADR treatment. The results show that hyperthermia enhances the incidence and the severity of chromosomal aberrations depending on ADR concentrations and posttreatment recovery. Maximal potentiation of aberrations resulted when hyperthermia and ADR were applied simultaneously. When ADR treatment was performed after exposure of the cells to hyperthermia for 1 hour, L cells became resistant to ADR and the potentiation of chromosomal aberrations was not observed.

GENETIC VARIABILITY OF BSSS MAIZE POPULATION

Abstract

Mišević, D., Dumanović, J. and Fidler, D. (1982): Genetic variability of BSSS maize population.- Genetika, Vol.14, No. 3, 267-276.

The genetic variability of grain yield, ear number per 100 plants, ear length, ear diameter, weight of 100 kernels, kernel depth, kernel row number and kernel moisture content were investigated in maize synthetic population BSSS.

The design I method of crossing was the mating design used to develop the experimental material. A total of 50 half-sib families containing 200 full-sib families were developed and evaluated in two environments (Zemun Polje and Zaječar).

Significant genetic variability was found for all tested traits. For all traits, except yield, the estimates indicated that the greatest portion of the genetic variance was due to an additive effect of the genes. However, estimates of dominance variance for yield was nearly twice as great as its additive variance. This would indicate that some form of intra-population selection should be effective for increasing the frequency of favourable genes determining yield. Simple mass selection should be used for improvement of all other traits.

Abstract

Naumovski, K. (1982): General and specific combining ability of some Virginia tobacco genotypes. - Genetika,Vol. 14, No.3, 277-283.

The object of the study was determination of the GCA and SCA in varieties of Virginia tobacco variety as indicated by the two features: number of leaves per stalk and width of the leaves from the middle belt. Based on the relation GCA/SCA for the two features investigated, we can state that additive gene action was prevalent.

The best general combining abilities for the feature "number of leaves per stalk" were noticed in the genotype 1494. The best general combining abilities for the feature "width of the leaves" were noticed in OL-2. Values for the specific combining abilities for the two features investigated were not significant.

DIFFERENTIAL MANIFESTATION OF MICRO-MUTATIONS FOR DIFFERENT QUANTITATIVE CHARACTERS IN LENTIL

Abstract

Sharma, S. K. and Sharma, B. (1982): Differential manifestation of micro-mutations for different quantitative characters in lentil - Genetika, Vol. 14, No. 3, 285-293.

The quantum of induced polygenic variability for five economic characters was compared in the M2 and M3 generations after 3 treating the seeds of two lentil varieties with gamma-rays and NMU, There were neither varietal nor mutagenic differences for the release of the genetic variability in both the generations. However, the characters differed in the manifestation of variability in different generations.

The appropriate generation for the selection of the micro mutations, is the one, which exhibits the highest variability and stabilization of the mean in a favourable direction. Accordingly, selection for days to flowering and branches/plant should be started in M2, whereas for 1,000 - seed weight in the M3 generation. The selection of the plants for higher pods and seed yield/plant will be more effective in the M3 than M2 generation. The conclusion of the present study need not be generalised as the effect of the mutagens and behaviour of mutations might vary depending on the genotype, mutagen and their interaction.

As part of an investigation on some somatic and genetic characteristics in certain local populations in Jugoslavia, 424 children from the village of Laznica and 290 from Žagubica in Homolje (Eastern Serbia) and 269 children from Belgrade were investigated between the ages of 6 and 14 years.

We followed the rate of growth and constitutional height. In order to define the constitutional factor for the height, a representative sample of adults (parents) from Laznica, Žagubica and Belgrade was included.

An investigation of haemogenic factors, such as the ABO system, Rh-factor, MN system, PTC test and other somatic genetic characteristics was made in order to detect fundamental genetic elements.

EDUCATION IN GENETICS IN HIGH SCHOOLS, VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES IN YUGOSLAVIA

Milka ŠOPOVA

Biological faculty, 91000 Skopje, Yugoslavia

Abstract

Šopova, M. (1981): Education in genetics in high schools, vocational schools and universities in Yugoslavia. - Genetika, Vol. 14, No. 3, 309-316.

The Second Yugoslav Congress of Genetics attempted to provide an overview of the current status of education in genetics in high schools, vocational schools and corresponding university faculties.

The increasing trend of genetic achievements indicated the necessity of introducing new programs in genetics, which will provide a flexible education of students at high schools, vocational schools and university faculties. The interest and importance for students of an education in genetics is unquestionable. Most occupations involving Biology, Medicine, Agronomy and even social activities such ; as the problems of family planning and the protection of the environment, are based upon a certain knowledge of genetics.

After analysis of available data concerning the education in genetics of students at high schools, vocational schools and corresponding faculties in Yugoslavia we have come to the following conclusions:

(1) Genetic education in high schools and vocational schools provide : satisfactory programs, especially for those whose vocations will depend on their subsequent education in a university faculty. We emphasize that genetic education in high schools and vocation schools in SR Serbia comprises an optimal volume and provide good selective programs.

(2) At the Faculties of Sciences and Applied biology, Medicine, Stomatology and Veterinary Medicine where education in genetics is of great importance, the subject of genetics is incorporated in the program of general biology. Thus, it is insufficient to provide a satisfactory education. Therefore, we have proposed that a special course of human and clinical genetics be introduced at the faculties of Medicine and Stomatology, besides the course of general biology. At the faculties of Veterinary Science it is proposed that a breeding of domestic animals.

(3) It was also considered that the current programs in genetics must provide a general education for all the students at the corresponding faculties. This is not only a formal requirement but an economically justifiable demand.
