Abstract

Matković Branka and Topisirovid, Lj. (1984): Isolation and characterization of a neamine- dependent (NeaD) mutant of Escherichia coli - Genetika, Vol. 16, No. 2, 95-101.

We have isolated a neamine-dependent (NeaD) mutant (ND7) of Escherichia coli, after EMS mutagenesis. The results show that mutant ND7 is sensitive to streptomycin and its antibiotic-dependency cannot be satisfied by either neomycin or kanamycin. It has properties (growth in the presence of ethanol and streptomycin) which distinguish it from the streptomycin-dependent mutant RH2808. It seems that mutant ND7 belongs to a new class of drug-dependent mutants.

Abstract

Barjaktarović Nada, Kostić Vitana, Pajević Miroslava, Pendić B. and Rekalić Jelica, (1984): Family translocation (4;19)(q33;ql3). - Genetika, Vol. 16, No. 2, 103-108.

Cytogenetic analysis were performed in a family where all members were sensitive to infections of the respiratory organs. The father and his three sons were carriers of the balanced translocation (4;19). Only one child was mentally retarded, which indicates a number of questions of theoretical and practical interest such as: is it a minor deletion or possibly the mutation of a single gene; why all successful pregnancies were with a balanced karyotype; and finally, the question of genetic counsel in the case of a new pregnancy where the foetus carries the same type of balanced translocation.

Hadži-Tašković Šukalović Vesna (1984): Lysine-ketoglutarate reductase activity in the developing endosperm of some high lysine maize mutants. - Genetika, Vol. 16, No. 2, 109-114.

Lysine-ketoglutarate reductase activity was determined in the developing endosperm of different maize mutants with an Oh43 genetic background. The presence of the o2 gene in the investigated maize lines decreased enzyme activity. Thus, lysine degradation during the development of opaque-2 endosperm was lower than in normal maize endosperm.

Abstract

Sinha B.C., Rai S.N. and Saha B.C. (1984): Correlation and path analysis in an advanced generation of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). - Genetika, Vol. 16, No, 2,131-138.

The approach of Rasmusson and Canne1 (1970) was used to study the nature of inter-relationship between various agronomic traits from a set of twenty five elite lines of F5 generation in wheat. The suitability of different traits was considered in order to study their direct and indirect use for achieving higher grain yield. For ten randomly selected plants from each treatment in each replication data were recorded for plant height, number of productive tillers per plant, spike length, number of grains per spike, 1000-grain weight, straw yield per plant and grain yield per plant. The number of grains per spike, 1000-grain weight and plant height exhibited high heritability estimates associated with high genetic advance. Estimates of genotypic correlation were, in general, higher than their corresponding phenotypic estimates. The number of productive tillers per plant, number of grains per spike and 1000-grain weight showed significant positive association with grain yield per plant. On the basis of path analysis data, it was revealed that number of productive tillers per plant, number of grains per spike and 1000-grain weight should be the criteria for selection of better plant types in advanced generations of wheat.

Abstract

Ropac D. (1984): Arbovirus infections in solidiers-border-guards found in individual regions of SR Croatia and SR Slovenia. - Genetika, Vol. 16, No, 1,139-152.

An investigation of professional exposure to natural focal arboviruses of soldiers in a borderguards unit was carried out in 504 test subjects. Serological testing established sero-conversion to the Sindbis, Dengue type 2, Tick-borne encephalitis, West Nile, Tahyna and Calove viruses. The intensity of the infection with the individual type of virus differed. Considerable differences were, moreover, found in the localities investigated. A group of 101 soldiers stationed outside the region of natural foci of infection underwent testing and served as a negative control group. The higher degree of exposure of soldiers - borderguards to infections with arboviruses was thus confirmed.

Abstract

Draganić M., Kraljević-Balalić Marija and Grubor S. (1984): Genetic analysis of some maize grain parameters. - Genetika, Vol. 16, No.2, 153-161.

Diallel crosses between five divergent maize inbred lines were made in order to evaluate the mode of inheritance and combining ability in the F1 and F2 generation for yield and yield components (ear weight, cob weight, grain weight and grain yield).

Significant differences in all the investigated traits were found between the inbred lines and their hybrids. It was also found that the inheritance of four traits in the F1 and F2 generations included both additive and non-additive gene action.

Inbred lines A632 and Mol7 had the highest GSA values and were, therefore, good combiners for grain yield.

AN ANALYSIS OF HETEROTIC POTENTIAL FOR GRAIN NUMBER IN RELATION TO OTHER METRIC TRAITS OF MAIZE (ZEA MAYS L.).

Abstract

Saha B.C. and Mukherjee EX. (1984): An analysis of heterotic potential for grain number in relation to other metric traits of maize. - Genetika, Vol. 16, No. 2, 163-172.

The investigations were carried out to study the phenotypic expression of four advanced generation inbreds and their crosses with regard to grain forming potential and other metric traits of maize. A number of characters, namely, grain yield per plant, number of ovules per ear, number of grains per ear, per cent grain conversion, number of ovules per row, number of grains per row, 100 grain weight, ear length and ear diameter were recorded to reveal the phenotypic expression of a genotype. The parents as well as the crosses possessed significantly fewer grains per ear in comparison to the corresponding number of ovules formed in an ear. Ear length possessed a significant and positive correlation with number of ovules and grains per ear but it did not restrict the conversion of potential grains to the actual number of grains per ear. The estimates of heterosis over the better parent were positive and significant for all the characters. The investigations emphasize the need for proper selection of parents (having higher number of ovules per ear, a high percentage grain conversion and other components of grain yield) to break the heterosis barrier for grain yield and thereby lead to higher grain yield per individual plant.

DISTRIBUTION OF THE ABO BLOOD GROUP AND Rh SYSTEM AND ITS RELATION TO SOME PARAMETERS OF FERTILITY IN A SAMPLE OF WOMEN GIVING BIRTH IN THE SARAJEVO REGION

Faculty of Science, University of Sarajevo 71000 Sarajevo, Yugoslavia

Abstract

Babić N. (1984): Distribution of the ABO blood group and Rh system and its relation to some parameters of fertility in a sample of women giving birth in the Sarajevo region. - Genetika, Vol. 16, No, 2, 175-190.

In a study of 7223 women who delivered a child during 1980 and 1981 at the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Clinic in Sarajevo, the distribution of ABO and Rh blood groups and its relation to some fertility parameters were examined. The differences in the adaptive value of the phenotypes have been studied also. There were no signs of differentiation of ABO blood groups according to the mean adaptive value. The increased mean fertility and general frequency of Rh negative women delivering may be considered as an indication of their increased selective value compared to the alternative phenotype.
