Milosevic, M., Živković, S. and Isaković, I. (1972): Chromosome characteristics of some Carnivora from Serbia.- Genetika, Vol. 4, No. 1, 1-8.
The chromosome complement of Alopex. lagopus and Felis sylvestris was examined. It was established that the diploid chromosome number of these species is 2n = 50 and 2n = 38 respectively. Our results for Alopex lagopus are not in accordance with the results of some other authors. The chromosome number for Felis sylvestris was found to be the same as that of Felis domestic.

Abstract
Ćirić, Milena and Nikoliš, Jovanka (1972): Some characteristics of marker chromosomes in the cells of Ehrlich ascites tumor in the mouse.- Genetika, Vol. 4, No. 1, 9-16.
The aim of this work was to approach by means of auto-radiography the intime nature of marker chromosomes found in the cells of an Erhlich ascites tumor in the mouse. Particular attention was paid to the minute markers, especially the extreme - so called »double - minutes«.
It was definitely concluded by autoradiographical analyses that minutes are not artefacts. Since they persist in all passages of ascitic tumor as well as of that in solid form, it is more likely that they represent telocentric chromosomes than acentric fragments.
On the basis of the character of replication of the markers it has been possible to discuss more critically the mechanism of their formation. This has been particularly valuable in the case of diminished telocentrics whose origin could be interpreted as a direct breakage in the region of the secondary constriction of the chromosome »rabbit-ear«.

An account is given of an investigation into cell divisions (mitotic and meiotic) in the spermatpgenic tissue of the species Paraphoxinus pstrossi Steind. (Cyprinidae, Pisces). Besides the cells containing the 'normal' haploid number of bivalents (nII =25), many first meiotic metaphase complements with more chromosome units (most frequently 27, 32, 43 and 50) were observed. Variation in the chromosome number also occurred in the spermatogonial mitotic divisions. Along with the cells with 'normal' diploid sets (2n = 50) there were many mitoses containing many more chromosomes (200 and even more chromosomes) in individual metaphases.

Abstract
Barjaktarović, Nada and Garžičić, B. (1972): Analysis of the karyotype of the domestic fowl Gallus domesticus (Leghorn). - Genetika, Vol. 4, No. 1, 25-34.
Birds are poorly investigated cytogenetically, the reason being undeveloped techniques and other difficulties arising from the size and the number of chromosomes. The majority authors have identified, without doubt, the structure of 11 pairs of chromosomes, amongst which are the sex chromosomes. The results concerning the number and the structure of chromosomes vary in the works of different authors although they concern the same species. In our work results obtained using the culture of fibro-blasts of embryonic tissue and peripheral blood of an adult animal, are given.

Abstract
Savković, Nada, Pečevski, Jugoslava and Malčić K. (1972): Induction of chromosomal translocations during meiosis of cells of mice irradiated in the infantile period. - Genetika, Vol. 4, No. 1, 35-39.
The aim of our investigation was to examine whether X-irradiation might induce chromosomal translocations in the spermatocytes at the first meiotic metaphase in mice irradiated during the infantile period. The animals (1, 8, 17 and 20 days-old) were total body irradiated with X-rays (400 R). The results obtained show that X-irradiation induces chromosomal translocations during meiosis in mice irradiated in the infantile period. Furthermore, the results also indicate a different degree of radio sensitivity of mice of different ages.

Abstract
Zergollern Ljiljana, Kirhmajer, V., Hitrec Vlasta and Pavleković, M. (1972): A cytological study of a population of newborn babies. - Genetika, Vol. 4, No. 1, 41-49.
In order to study the frequency of chromosomal aberrations in a population of newborn babies, a team in the Cytogenetical Laboratory of the Pediatric Clinic Rebro, Zagreb together with the Obstetrical Department of the Clinical Center at Dr. Mladen Stojanović Hospital, have examined the chromosomal status of blood samples from many newborn babies. During the six-month period 806 samples of blood were satisfactorily cultured. Both girls (316) and boys (430) were cytogenetically examined. Nine of these children had pronounced chromosomal abnormalities: six with structural and two with numerical chromosomal changes. Only two infants possessed clinical symptoms (one with Down syndrome and other with Turner syndrome).
The percentage of gross chromosomal abnormalities in our group is 1.1.

The study of ear lobe types in a sample of 422 families from Sarajevo (Bosnia, Yugoslavia) has shown that the corresponding population is in a state of genetic equilibrium regarding the observed character. It has been found that the percentage frequency of the attached ear lobe in the sample is 32.76%. Simple dominant autosomal inheritance appears a satisfactory explanation of the mode of inheritance of the free ear lobe, according to the data reported here. The proportion of the recessive allele in both subgroups of the sample was found to be 0.57.

Abstract
Gavrilović, Ž. and Božić, Verica (1972): A study on the manner of clasping the hands and folding the arms in Vojvodina. - Genetika, Vol. 4, No. 1, 59-65.
The authors have investigated the way of clasping the hands and folding the arms in 2686 persons of both sexes ranging in age from 6-80 years in Vojvodina. It has been established that the right-handed type of hand clasping is found in 51.3% of men, and 52.4% of women. The right-handed type of arm folding is found in 45.1% of men and in women it occurs in 46.0% of the cases examined. The authors think that these properties are influenced both by constitution and by habit to a large extent.

Zergollern, Ljiljana, Tepavčević, D. and Hitrec, Vlasta (1972): The development of human Cytogenetics in the Socialist Republic of Croatia.- Genetika, Vol. 4, No. 1, 67-73.
With the aim of acquainting colleagues from other republics of Yugoslavia with their work in the field of human genetics, the authors relate their experiences and call on others to do the same. The article stresses that the work of geneticians from abroad is much better known in Yugoslavia than that of Yugoslav geneticians. Let us therefore get to known one another and our respective work, let us organize better and we shall be stronger and much more appreciated both at home and abroad.

Abstract
Zergollern Ljiljana (1972): The role of doctors in human genetics. - Genetika, Vol. 4, No. 1, 75-81.
In this article the author gives a survey of the history of human genetics, pointing out the important role played by doctors in its development. The author also stresses how greatly doctors are interested in human and medical genetics today. Team work is called for in which various experts working in different fields of genetics would be engaged. In addition some suggestions are made concerning the conditions prevalent in medical science in Yugoslavia. The author proposes that a Section of Human Geneticians be founded and that human, namely medical genetics be introduced in Yugoslav medical schools as an optional subject. The need for the opening of Centres for genetical counselling in this country is also pointed out. Finally the author expresses her conviction that the next Congress of Geneticians medical people, who are in minority now, will participate much more actively.

Abstract
Zagožen, F. (1972): Selection index in animal breeding. - Genetika, Vol. 4, No. 1, 83-91.
The article deals with the problem of the choice of characteristics to be included in the selection index and the use of the index in family and combined selection.
The relative economic weights of some characteristics by which the quality and quantity of production are measured, are variables which means that these characteristics are not appropriate for inclusion in the selection index.

Abstract
Pogačar, J. and Ferčej, J. (1972): Selection models of brown cattle population in Slovenia. - Genetika, Vol. 4, No. 1, 93-104.
Seven selection models have been made of the brown cattle in Slovenia, where 65.000 cows were artificially inseminated and the milk production of 10.500 cows is regularly controlled.
The greatest genetical progress is obtained in the model in which the population of brown cattle in Slovenia is treated as one selection unit. In this model the annual import of sperm from two elite bulls is expected from other populations of brown cattle. The model involves selections in respect of 3 production characteristics, namely milk production, meat production and milk flow to which the following relative economical relationship is attributed: 50 : 40 : 10.

Abstract
Borojević, S. (1972): Genetic approach in elaborating a model of high yielding wheat varieties. - Genetika, Vol. 4, No. 1, 105-117.
In order to create high yielding wheat varieties, it seems to be necessary to elaborate a model variety for certain ecological and agrotechnical conditions. The presented model takes into consideration the main determining components of yield on the basis of genetic factors which have to be incorporated into the genotype and of environmental factors which have to be supplied or controlled in order to achieve maximal realization of the genetic capacity for yield.

Abstract
Alačević Marija (1972): Importance of microbial genetics in the improvement of the productivity of microorganisms in industry.- Genetika, Vol. 4, No. 1, 119-127.
The only relevant contribution to the improvement of industrially important microorganisms has been the use of mutagenic agents. This tool has been applied in a somewhat empirical way. The more refined techniques of genetic recombination the principles of molecular genetics have not entered significantly into the field of the improvement of production of the desired metabolites from industrially useful microorganisms.
